Traditional handicraft alive in Ta Van (Source: Internet)Both Ta Van Village and Cat Cat Village are among the most popular destinations in Sapa, Lao Cai province, northern Vietnam. These two ethnic minority villages (primarily H’mong and Dao people) offer travelers a chance to experience authentic mountain life, terraced rice fields, traditional handicrafts, and stunning natural scenery.
While both are beautiful and only about 10–12 km apart, they deliver completely different experiences:
Cat Cat Village → tourism-oriented, easy access, more commercial
Ta Van Village → more authentic, peaceful, deeper cultural immersion
Choosing between Ta Van Village vs Cat Cat Village depends on what kind of experience you are looking for: quick cultural photos & souvenirs, or a slower, more genuine connection with local life.
Legend Travel Group specializes in carefully designed small-group tours to both villages, helping you experience the best of each without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Join fellow adventurers on the Muong Hoa valley trail (Source: Internet)Cat Cat wins easily: only 3 km from Sapa center → you can walk (downhill), take a motorbike taxi (~20,000 VND), or join a short group tour.
Ta Van requires more effort: 12 km, mostly downhill but the road is winding. Most visitors choose motorbike taxi (~80,000–120,000 VND round trip) or join a guided tour with transport included.
Cat Cat is the most commercialized village in Sapa. You’ll find many souvenir shops, cafés, photo spots, and staged cultural performances.
Ta Van is significantly less commercial. While there are a few homestays and small shops, most families still live traditional lives. The village feels more authentic.
Cat Cat is often packed with tourists (especially Chinese & Korean groups in peak season).
Ta Van is much quieter, especially if you go early or on weekdays. Perfect for those who want a peaceful experience.
Ta Van is considered more authentic: more original houses, real working rice fields, and fewer staged elements.
Cat Cat still offers genuine H’mong culture, but many parts are heavily modified for tourism.
Both are beautiful, but in different ways:
Cat Cat: small waterfall, stream, suspension bridge, lush greenery
Ta Van: spectacular Muong Hoa Valley terraced fields, river, traditional bridges, mountain views
Ta Van is the clear winner for overnight stays: many authentic homestays with river views, home-cooked meals, and cultural exchange.
Cat Cat has very few genuine homestays (most are commercial guesthouses).
