Why Explore Hoi An by Bike and Motorbike?

In addition to the above vehicles, travelers can rent motorbikes and bicycles at the hotel or other rental locations. The price usually is ranged from 50,000 - 100,000 VND per bike and 150,000 - 200,000 per motorbike for a day.

Why Choose Legend Travel Group?

When you arrive in Hoi An, you will see bicycles everywhere. Cycling is a popular mode of transport for tourists wanting to explore the Hoi An and for locals to get around. There are two main hire options: fixed gear town bikes and mountain bikes. The majority of hostels and hotels will have bikes that can be rented either free or for a very small fee-usually less than 50,000 VND (2 USD) a day. They can also be hired from countless places around town. These will all be fixed gear town bikes, some of them in a better state than others. These bikes are great if you are planning on cycling around Hoi An’s Old Town or to the beach. However, because they don’t have any gears or suspension, they are not so good if you’re going further afield. If you’re planning on cycling into the countryside or anywhere outside of the city of Hoi An, then we definitely recommend getting a mountain bike.

Administrative Update

Motorbike hire is pretty easy in Hoi An, you just have to walk outside your hotel. However, not all have good reputations. Below is a list of places for motorbike hire and the cost per day. They have all been recommended to Hoi An Now by other tourists or foreign locals. You can sometimes negotiate cheaper prices for weekly or monthly rentals. Booking vehicles through your hotel or Homestay is convenient but it will most likely be more expensive. Helmets are compulsory in Vietnam (though judging by the ‘helmets’ some people wear you could probably stick a pot on your head and be okay). We also recommend you check the bike over thoroughly before renting a motorbike. Look particularly at whether brakes, lights and indicators are working and the state of tires. In our experience, rental motorbikes are sometimes plain dangerous to ride. Don’t worry about pointing out issues, they will give you another motorbike (check that one too!) or fix it.

Bike and Motorbike Rental Options in Hoi An

Biking and motorbiking are popular ways to explore Hoi An’s Old Town, beaches, and countryside. Below are updated rental options, prices, and safety tips for 2026–2028, replacing outdated information (e.g., 50,000–100,000 VND for bikes, 150,000–200,000 VND for motorbikes).

Bicycle Rentals

Bicycles are ideal for Hoi An’s flat terrain, pedestrianized Old Town (8:30 AM–11:00 AM, 3:00 PM–9:30 PM), and short trips to An Bang Beach or Tra Que Village.

Types and Features

  • Fixed-Gear Town Bikes: Simple, no gears, perfect for Old Town and beach rides (4–5 km). Often provided by hotels or hostels, but quality varies. Suitable for casual riders.
  • Mountain Bikes: Geared, with suspension, ideal for countryside routes (e.g., Thanh Ha Pottery Village, 3 km) or longer trips (e.g., My Son Sanctuary, 40 km). Better for uneven terrain.
  • Electric Bikes (50cc): Pedal-assist, no license required, eco-friendly with up to 100 km range. Great for riders seeking ease or longer distances (e.g., Ha My Beach, 8 km).

Prices

  • Fixed-Gear Town Bikes: $1–$2/day (25,000–50,000 VND); often free at budget hotels or homestays.
  • Mountain Bikes: $3–$5/day (75,000–125,000 VND).
  • Electric Bikes: $6–$10/day (150,000–250,000 VND).
  • Weekly Rentals: 10–20% discount (e.g., $5–$10/week for town bikes).
  • Deposits: Passport photo or $20–$50 (500,000–1,250,000 VND) cash; some providers require no cash deposit, just a passport copy.

Where to Rent

  • Hotels/Hostels: Most offer town bikes, often free or $1/day, but quality may be inconsistent. Check brakes and tires before renting.
  • Hoi An Bike Rental: 14 Cua Dai St. & 34/14 Hung Vuong St., Minh An Ward. Offers high-quality town and mountain bikes ($1–$5/day) with free delivery, helmets, and route maps.
  • Grasshopper Adventures: 27 Phan Boi Chau St., Minh An Ward. Specializes in mountain and electric bikes ($3–$10/day) with guided tours. Book via Klook for discounts.
  • Local Shops: Countless stalls around Tran Phu and Cua Dai streets; ensure bikes are well-maintained.

Safety Tips

  • Inspect the Bike: Check brakes, tires, chain, and bell. Report damage to avoid liability.
  • Wear a Helmet: Optional but recommended; quality helmets ($0.50–$1 or 12,500–25,000 VND) available at reputable providers.
  • Ride Defensively: Stick to the right; use hand signals; avoid weaving through traffic. Old Town’s pedestrian zones limit bike access during restricted hours.
  • Night Riding: Use front/rear lights (included with quality rentals); wear reflective clothing.
  • Route Planning: Use Maps.me for offline navigation; avoid highways like AH1 for safety. Stick to scenic routes (e.g., Cua Dai to An Bang).
  • Weather Awareness: Carry rain ponchos (provided by rentals); avoid November floods.

Motorbike Rentals

Motorbikes offer greater range for exploring sites like My Son Sanctuary (40 km) or Hai Van Pass (50 km), but require caution due to Vietnam’s traffic and legal requirements.

Types and Features

  • Automatic Scooters (50–160cc): Honda Air Blade, Yamaha NVX, Honda PCX. Easy to ride, ideal for city and short trips (e.g., An Bang, Ha My Beach). 50cc scooters require no license, suitable for novices.
  • Semi-Automatic Motorbikes (110–125cc): Honda Wave, Future. Affordable, with manual gears but no clutch, good for countryside or moderate terrain.
  • Manual Motorbikes (125–300cc): Honda XR150, Kawasaki Versys X300. For experienced riders tackling long distances or rugged routes (e.g., Hai Van Pass). Require license and skill.
  • Electric Scooters (50cc): Eco-friendly, no license needed, 100 km range. Ideal for city and short countryside rides.

Prices

  • 50cc Scooters: $5–$7/day (125,000–175,000 VND); no license required.
  • 100–160cc Scooters: $6–$10/day (150,000–250,000 VND).
  • Semi-Automatic (110–125cc): $4–$8/day (100,000–200,000 VND).
  • Manual (125–300cc): $10–$25/day (250,000–625,000 VND); larger bikes (e.g., Honda CB500X) $40–$60/day (1,000,000–1,500,000 VND).
  • Electric Scooters: $8–$12/day (200,000–300,000 VND).
  • Weekly Rentals: 10–20% discount (e.g., $20–$50/week for scooters).
  • Monthly Rentals: $80–$240 (2,000,000–6,000,000 VND) for scooters; $200–$450 (5,000,000–11,250,000 VND) for larger bikes.
  • Deposits: Passport photo or $50–$250 (1,250,000–6,250,000 VND) cash; reputable providers require no passport, just a photo.
  • Additional Costs: Fuel $1–$2/day (25,000–50,000 VND); helmets $0.50–$1 (12,500–25,000 VND) if not included; delivery/pick-up in Da Nang $5–$10 (125,000–250,000 VND).

Where to Rent

  • Hoi An Bike Rental: 14 Cua Dai St., Minh An Ward. Offers scooters and manual bikes ($5–$15/day) with free delivery, helmets, ponchos, and 24/7 roadside assistance.
  • Motorvina: Multiple locations in Hoi An and Da Nang. Premium scooters and manual bikes ($5–$25/day), luggage transfer for one-way trips (e.g., Hoi An to Hue), and online booking. Known for 500+ well-maintained bikes.
  • Tuan Motorbike Rental: Tran Nhan Tong St., Minh An Ward. Reliable scooters and one-way rentals ($5–$15/day) with helmets and route maps.
  • Style Motorbikes: 292 Vo Van Kiet, Hoi An. High-end manual bikes ($10–$60/day) for long-distance travel, with one-way options to Hue or Hanoi.
  • Hotels/Homestays: Convenient but pricier ($8–$15/day); quality varies. Check bike condition thoroughly.

Legal and Safety Requirements

  • Licensing:
    • 50cc scooters and electric bikes require no license (age 16+), covered by most travel insurance.
    • Bikes over 50cc require a Vietnamese A1 license or an International Driving Permit (IDP) with a motorcycle endorsement. Foreign licenses alone are often not recognized; conversion to A1 costs $15–$25 (375,000–625,000 VND) for 3+ month stays.
    • Police checks are rare in Hoi An, but fines for unlicensed riding can reach $40–$80 (1,000,000–2,000,000 VND). Carry IDP and rental agreement.
  • Helmet: Mandatory; fines up to $20 (500,000 VND) for non-compliance. Use quality helmets (3/4-face or full-face) provided by reputable rentals.
  • Safety Checks: Inspect brakes, tires, lights, horn, and mirrors before riding. Take photos of existing damage to avoid liability. Test ride to check oil leaks or engine issues.
  • Traffic Rules: Speed limit 40 km/h in Hoi An, 60 km/h on highways; ride on the right; no weaving through traffic (fines $10–$20 or 250,000–500,000 VND).
  • Defensive Riding: Anticipate erratic traffic; use horn to signal; avoid night riding due to poor lighting. Stay off highways like AH1 unless experienced.
  • Insurance: Confirm rental includes basic insurance; personal travel insurance may cover 50cc scooters but not larger bikes without a license.
  • Roadside Assistance: Choose providers offering 24/7 support (e.g., flat tire repair, bike replacement).

Sustainable Tourism and Recent Updates

Hoi An’s bike and motorbike rentals align with Da Nang City’s sustainable tourism goals:

  • Eco-Friendly Transport: Bicycles and electric scooters produce zero emissions; providers use fuel-efficient bikes.
  • Community Support: Rentals employ 100+ local mechanics and guides; revenue supports Minh An’s artisans via the Hoi An Center for Cultural Heritage Management.
  • Infrastructure: Da Nang’s cycling paths and 2023 flood mitigation (VND500 billion) ensure safe routes, though November floods may disrupt low-lying areas.
  • 2026–2028 Trends: Expansion of electric bike-sharing, solar-powered rental stations, and vegan dining options at tour stops to cater to Asian tourists (Chinese, Korean markets).
  • Challenges: Unlicensed riding and poor-quality rentals pose safety risks; overtourism strains Old Town. Choose reputable providers and early morning rides to reduce impact.

Legend Travel Group’s tours integrate sustainable rentals, supporting local economies and minimizing environmental impact.
